Interviews

In honor of the 2017 ICCA tournament, The A Cappella Blog pursued short interviews with competing groups to develop insights into why and how groups approach competition, and to get appropriately excited for the tremendous shows ahead of us.

What’s your group name and on what date is your group’s quarterfinal?

Our group's name is Fuse A Cappella. The date of our quarterfinal is January 21.

How long has your group been around? Have you competed before?

Fuse A Cappella was established in the fall of 2014. Our first (large-scale) competition experience was ICCA 2016.

Why are you competing this year? What does your group hope to accomplish or get out of the experience?

Around this time last year, beginning to compete was the next step in continuing to grow as a relatively young group at UT Austin. After such a positive first ICCA experience, we came away confident that we had learned a great deal and could improve even more a second time around.

How is your group preparing for competition?

We are maximizing our rehearsal time towards working on our ICCA set. In addition to that, we hold sectionals and group members have the music to work on outside of rehearsals. After winter break, we hope to hit the ground running with choreography sessions and (likely) additional rehearsals.

If you were to describe your group, or the set your group is planning for competition with just three words, what would they be?

Our group: family, diversity, growth.
