This April, The International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella will crown this year’s champion. The competition began, though in 1996. Before the letters ICCA took hold, the competition went by the acronym of NCCA (the National Competition of College A Cappella). The University of North Carolina Loreleis, an all-female group won the first championship on April 14,1996, at Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center, in New York City.

The Loreleis emerged from what was then called the "Mason Dixon” region of the competition. To this day, they are one of only two all-female groups to win the entire competition. The morning after their big win, the group sang En Vogue's "Hold onto Your Love" on Good Morning America.
