The International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella was originally known as the National Competition of College A Cappella. The acronym NCCA was deliberately similar to that of NCAA, to draw attention to the competition, and highlight the similarities in the nature of the tournament structure. The name change was, of course, appropriate when the competition became international, including not only American groups, but Canadian groups, European groups and, for a limited time, Asian groups.
