The Midnight Ramblers Cover of Lazy Sunday
For the uninitiated, it can be difficult to understand why people love a cappella. Heck, even for those of us who do actively enjoy it, it can be difficult to put into words why we enjoy this art form so. While we’ll never have a truly comprehensive list of everything cool about a cappella, 200 Reasons to Love A Cappella is our best attempt at assembling a list of what makes it great.
Reason #85: The Midnight Ramblers Cover of “Lazy Sunday”
In fall 2005, fledgling comic band The Lonely Sunday started a mini-revolution on Saturday Night Live by recording digital shorts. Thought it was, technically, the second one, it’s pretty fair to argue that the show within a show was made by “Lazy Sunday,” a strident rap centered on seeing a matinee showing of The Chronicles of Narnia.”
The song caught on quickly, but mere weeks after it first aired, The University of Rochester Midnight Ramblers were on it, spinning their own rendition for all to hear. This represents the best of off-beat song selection, paired with a capacity to arrange and learn a piece quickly to capitalize on it while it’s still fully relevant. The song was a true show stopper, perfect for the college crowd, perfect for the time.
Edit: Special thanks to Ramblers alumnus Jeff Le for hooking us up with a video of the performance at hand!
I love it!
