The Intrigue of Auditions
For the uninitiated, it can be difficult to understand why people love a cappella. Heck, even for those of us who do actively enjoy it, it can be difficult to put into words why we enjoy this art form so. While we’ll never have a truly comprehensive list of everything cool about a cappella, 200 Reasons to Love A Cappella is our best attempt at assembling a list of what makes it great.
Reason #80: The Intrigue of Auditions
Auditions change things. New voices. New personalities. Each time a group’s leadership sits down and listens to the people who hope to join the crew, it marks an occasion that will undoubtedly shape the future of that ensemble. But does the group seek out the best talents available? Or do they focus on replacing the key vocal parts lost in last year’s graduating class? How does social compatibility factor into decisions?
And how do auditions look from auditionees’ perspectives? A chance to show off their talents? A harrowing test of nerves? The first step toward something incredibly cool to come, or an experience they’ll just as soon forget as they look for the next extracurricular to involve themselves with?
No two a cappella groups conduct auditions exactly the same way, and no two singers have identical experiences. Nonetheless, the fact remains that auditions mark one of the most interesting and exciting parts of any a cappella group’s year.
I love it!
