The Girl Who Breaks Your Heart

200 Reasons To Love A Cappella

Reason #15: The Girl Who Breaks Your Heart

The performance of emotional songs is an everyday occurrence in a cappella. What’s more rare, though, is to catch a soloist who really gets a song. I’m not just talking about getting all the lyrics right or hitting every note. What I’m talking about is a visceral connection to the song. There’s a voice dripping with emotion, and even taking some liberties to make the song her own, and therefore, that much more personal. There facial expressions to connect with the feeling behind the song, body language to tie the whole thing together in something beyond theater—something that could pass for full-on honesty.

It’s rare to see a solo quite this good, but you know it when you’ve got it. It’s the girl from The Cornell Chordials on “Precious Things” in 2007. It’s girl from FSU All Night-Yahtzee on “Not Ready To Make Nice” in 2008. It’s magic.

I love it!
