Guitar Solos
For the uninitiated, it can be difficult to understand why people love a cappella. Heck, even for those of us who do actively enjoy it, it can be difficult to put into words why we enjoy this art form so. While we’ll never have a truly comprehensive list of everything cool about a cappella, 200 Reasons to Love A Cappella is our best attempt at assembling a list of what makes it great.
Reason #12: Guitar Solos
This reason might have a few of you scratching your heads, because I, like many other a cappella critics, have thoroughly condemned the use of guitar solos in a cappella in the past. I’m not backing down from my stance that 99% of the time, a guitar solo is not appropriate for serious performance or for in a competitive setting.
With that being said, I must note something that I assume everyone reading this post already knows--a cappella is not always serious. In many cases, a cappella is just about a group of collaborating artists and friends having fun, making music and entertaining their friends and family. In this context of just cutting loose and having a good time, there is, perhaps, no more fun spectacle than the sight and sound of the human voice emulating a guitar solo. It will rarely be pretty, rarely be all that musically sound, but I’ll be darned if it’s not entertaining.
I love it!
