Girls Who Can Beatbox
For the uninitiated, it can be difficult to understand why people love a cappella. Heck, even for those of us who do actively enjoy it, it can be difficult to put into words why we enjoy this art form so. While we’ll never have a truly comprehensive list of everything cool about a cappella, 200 Reasons to Love A Cappella is our best attempt at assembling a list of what makes it great.
Reason #10: Girls Who Can Beatbox
I don’t mean for this to sound sexist, but let’s be honest—there’s a high percentage of all female a cappella groups with lackluster vocal percussion. Indeed, it’s traditionally not an area of strength—even perennial powerhouse Divisi started out by bringing a guy in to do all of their beatboxing.
Things have evened out of the years, though, and more and more often, you don’t have to settle for a young woman ‘playing it safe’ with her perc, too soft, not animated, repeating the same simple syllables over and over again. More and more often, there are women who through caution to the wind, asserting their equality and tearing loose with some legit drum action. It’s still uncommon enough to not be expected, but when you do see it, offers a special feeling—a sort of accomplishment and sense of maturation that can’t help but make a long-time fan smile.
I love it!
