Celebrity Alumni
For the uninitiated, it can be difficult to understand why people love a cappella. Heck, even for those of us who do actively enjoy it, it can be difficult to put into words why we enjoy this art form so. While we’ll never have a truly comprehensive list of everything cool about a cappella, 200 Reasons to Love A Cappella is our best attempt at assembling a list of what makes it great.
Reason #23: Celebrity Alumni
What’s more fun than seeing pictures of stars when they were just nerdy little kids, or seeing footage from home movies that, on some level, predicted their stardom to come? I’ll tell you what—finding out that celebrity was once a part of an a cappella group!
Sure, some a cappella alumni like Ed Helms wear their a cappella histories like badges of honor. But there are many others who don’t advertise their histories. Take James VanDerBeek—can you picture the dude from Dawson’s Creek taking the stage, snapping his fingers, and ‘doo-ba-dooing’ alongside his fellow members of his Drew University group? What’s more, you have great musicians who were a part of the collegiate a cappella scene like John Legend and Sara Bareilles. It can be a lot of fun to think of such performers at this developmental stage, or to scheme out a super group of celebrity alum.
I love it!
