ICCA Finalists The Oxford Gargoyles

Interviews

With the ICCA Finals just days away, the Western European Champion Oxford Gargoyles took the time to answer questions from A Cappella Blog co-founder Mike Chin.

A Cappella Blog (ACB): For those who have not seen or heard The Gargoyles before, how would you describe the group? What makes you unique?

The Gargoyles (TG): We usually go for describing ourselves as "jazz a cappella"--we're made up of 12 guys and girls from Oxford University, and perform in black tie.

ACB: Describe your journey to the ICCA Finals this year. Were there any bumps along the road? Did you expect to make it this far? What has been the best part of competing?

TG: We didn't at all expect the success we have had this year--coming in the top three at the European semis would have been really amazing, and so winning was just even more really amazing. Quite a shock really. We have worked so hard all year to get the group where it is--we have come on a long way from a year ago, and so having the chance to perform in New York is a perfect reward, and we're very excited. It's been great for the confidence of what is usually quite a modest group too--we've even put on some solo concerts since winning!

ACB: Are you doing anything out of the ordinary to prepare for finals?

TG: We've had t-shirts made, but unfortunately they are too big. Rehearsal-wise, we plan to practice with the whole group together (for the first time in a month) on the actual day of the final, due to exam commitments...

ACB: Can you describe your group's history in competition? How many times has the group competed in the past? What sort of results did the group achieve before?

TG: Last year was the only other year we have entered. We didn't finish in the top-four in our region.

ACB: In your opinion, what has been the most important element to your success as an a cappella group this year?

TG: A group of friends really motivated to show Oxford (and now the world!) what we can do, but without overdoing the rehearsing to take away any of the joy of singing our music.

ACB: If you had to describe the set you are bringing to competition using just three words, what words would you choose?

TG: Not very funny.

ACB: What would a victory in the ICCA Finals mean to you and your group?

TG: A communal heart attack. And maybe another solo concert to celebrate.
