Interviews

In honor of the 2017 ICCA tournament, The A Cappella Blog pursued short interviews with competing groups to develop insights into why and how groups approach competition, and to get appropriately excited for the tremendous shows ahead of us.

What’s your group name and on what date is your group’s quarterfinal?

Euphoria. February 18, 2017.

How long has your group been around? Have you competed before?

This is Euphoria’s 11th year as an active a cappella group. We have competed in numerous local and state-wide competitions, including several ICCA competitions.

Why are you competing this year? What does your group hope to accomplish or get out of the experience?

We are competing this year in hopes to represent Grand Valley as best we can through music, and to have a ton of fun while doing so! We are hoping to learn a lot about ourselves and our rehearsal processes, as well as learn from watching, and getting to know, the other competing groups as well along the way.

How is your group preparing for competition?

We have been working very hard to prepare a spectacular set to perform at the ICCAs! Part of our preparations have included a “boot camp” that we completed upon coming back from our winter break where we spent nearly an entire weekend doing nothing but learn our music and choreography for our upcoming ICCA set so that we could have as much polishing time as possible! We also competed in the 7th annual A Cappella-Off! in Allendale, Michigan and took 1st place! Now we are rehearsing twice a week to continue striving to accomplish one of our best performances ever at the upcoming ICCA competition!

If you were to describe your group, or the set your group is planning for competition with just three words, what would they be?

Three words to describe our set would be: Love, Loss, and Funk.
