Competing

Dos and Don'ts

DON'T: Be afraid to compete.

DO: Start participating in competitions.

"The way to get things done is to stimulate competition. I do not mean in a sordid, money-getting way, but in the desire to excel." - Charles Schwab

Many colleges have multiple a cappella groups that they can call their own. However, many competitive a cappella fans would never know that they exist (unless they visit ACB next season for the comprehensive listing!). Many, if not most members of a cappella groups participate because they love music or the feeling of belonging to a team. Those are all the right reasons. I don't doubt, though, that every group strives to be the best that they can in all elements of performance. One of the best moves a group can make is to start competing in a cappella events. On one hand, this gives exposure to the rest of the a cappella world. Beyond that, it helps groups to not only identify their weaknesses, but also come up with new ideas, both of which will help them improve on the whole.
