Newsline: Halloween-Themed A Cappella Videos, Sing-Off Updates

-Season two of The Sing-Off is gathering steam. Check out this article from The Philadelphia Inquirer about alumni from ICHSA mainstays, The Cherry Hill West Men of Note, making a run at this year's competition. Then there's this article from The University of Oregon Daily Emerald about On the Rocks' bid for a cappella glory.

-In the spirtit of Halloween weekend, we share with you these two themed performances:

Brigham Young University Vocal Point performing "Thriller."

Hamilton College Duelly Noted performing "The Monster Mash."

-For collegiate groups, this is a final reminder--the 2010-2011 ACB Collegiate A Cappella Group Survey is live, and this Sunday marks the last day when you can participate. We emailed invitations to every group we could find an address for, but are still eager to reach more folks. -Head here for the first official word on season two of The Sing-Off. The episodes will air December 6, 8, 13, 15, and 20, with ten competing groups including the nation's first collegiate a cappella group, The Yale Whiffenpoofs, recent internet sensation University of Oregon On the Rocks, and 2010 ICCA finalists Berklee College of Music Pitch Slapped.

-The Washington Post blogs posted this follow-up article about the Georgetown GraceNotes.

-The Frisky posted this fun feature about celebrities with a cappella or show choir roots.

-In case you missed it, The Washington Post published an article Tuesday about the changing face of collegiate a cappella, focused mostly on the Georgetown scene.

-There was a neat article in The Times Union, based out of Albany, NY, about The Skidmore College Drastic Measures, a group dedicated to supporting charitable causes.

-You know collegiate a cappella is hitting it big when it gets the satirical treatment in both The New York Times and McSweeney's in the same week.

-The Temple News posted this article about new co-ed a cappella group, OwlCappella.

Newsline: A Cappella in The Social Network, Collegiate Group Survey, and a New Group at UNC

-Those who go to see The Social Network, which opened in theaters across the US Friday, will be treated to a fair amount of talk about collegiate a cappella groups during the opening scene of the movie (albeit the fact that very little of it is complimentary). The film also featured a cameo by UCLA Bruin Harmony, posing as a Harvard group, to perform All-4-One’s “I Swear.” Here’s a clip of the group performing the song (not the performance that appears in the movie):

-The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Daily Tar Heel posted this article about some guys who didn’t make the cut at a cappella auditions this year, and opted to start up their own new group.

Newsline: Straight No Chaser Contest, A Cappella in the Press

-Straight No Chaser is putting on an a cappella contest, the winners of which will get to perform “The 12 Days of Christmas" alongside the group for a special video project. The deadline is September 20. Check out the details here.

-The Best Week Ever Blog spotlighted The Brown Jabberwocks' brand new cover of a Cee Lo Green song (note: NSFW).

-Mental Floss ran a fun, if not 100% accurate post on collegiate a cappella this week.

-The Bowdoin Orient college newspaper published this interesting piece on the a cappella group selection process coming out of auditions, as run through the school’s a cappella council.

Newsline: A Cappella Survey, Inception Trailer Done A Cappella

-The A Cappella Blog will be releasing a brief survey to every collegiate a cappella group we can get a hold of in next 1-2 weeks. Results will be used for an exciting new feature in the 2011 season. If you're part of a group, be sure to keep an eye on your inbox. If you don't receive an invitation, don't hesitate to get in touch via our contact page.

Newsline: Contest, Fundraiser

The ACB will return to regular posting in January 2011. In the meantime, some news bits:

-The Shipyard Sings is an a cappella competition based in Hingham, MA. It's open to all area a cappella groups, with the winners earning a $500 cash prize and the chance to open for the Tufts University Beelzebubs on September 18, 2010.

There will be two rounds of competition, the first of which is underway now, the second of which will start later in the summer. Entrants submit videos here between June 8 and July 16, and the five text-to-vote winners will compete live on July 31 at a show in which the live audience will pick the winner. The second edition runs from July 17 to August 17, with a live show on August 31. Both winning groups will get cash and the chance to perform alongside the 'Bubs.

-Saint Louis University Bare Naked Statues is trying to raise money to create a new CD in the fall. You can support their cause by purchasing some group merchandise or unique services (telephone serenade, anyone?) here.
