The Three Song Set
On selected Thursdays, ACB Production Manager Mike Scalise makes his recommendations on a cappella performance in a DO and DON’T format.
DON'T: Limit yourself to just three songs.
DO: Showcase your range through a greater number of songs or medleys.
There is a common misconception in the ICCAs that groups must perform three songs within their allotted twelve-minute set. However, I have seen groups choose to stray from the norm by choosing more than three songs, or by performing only one or two full songs, then integrating a medley into the rest of the set. Granted, this may add another layer of difficulty to the set as a whole, but doing so has the potential to really impress the judges and audience with a wide range of vocals. In addition, you can get creative with the medleys--all samples from the same artist, genre, decade, or tied by some other common thread. The key is to leave a (good) lasting impression.
