Stage Departure

Dos and Don'ts

DON'T: Walk normally off stage after a set.

DO: Leave the stage in style.

I'm not sure if there's a lot of thought that goes into a stage departure amongst collegiate a cappella groups, but I think it's an important aspect of the entire set. The two most common departures I've seen are groups simply walking off stage after their third song and groups bowing to the audience, then walking off stage. What I suggest is that collegiate groups learn something from a high school group. In the 2008 ICCA & ICHSA finals, the high school champions--Cherry Hill High School West's Men of Note--left the stage by having each person spin clockwise toward the exit, then clapping as they left the stage with every bit as much energy as they had shown when they first came out. It was simple, unique, different and high energy--overall, leaving a lasting impression. So the next time you're planning your competition performance, keep your stage departure in mind.
